traffic at dead stop on i69 near imlay

July 29th, 2007

hopefully my moblogging set up still works. Traffic is at a dead stop on west 69 Near wilder rd Many emergency vehicles have passed us But still no Police. i am Sure traffic is very backed up as we have been sitting here 30 Minutes already. people are out of their cars walking around. avoid the area if you Can and it would be great if You could send police to direct traffic and get us Going.

Update 7:05pm - Well I guess moblogging still works. :) We’re home now (sweet!) … they opened up one lane shortly after this posted. I don’t know exactly what happened but it looked ugly. I didn’t go slow to look at the accident, but I did have the video camera running the whole time, so I’ll post some pictures later. Hope everyone there is ok. By the way, approximately 1-2 miles west of the accident are the signs “PRISON AREA DO NOT PICK UP HITCH-HIKERS” … just one little example of why people shouldn’t get out of their cars and walk around when they are stopped on the highway.

Having A Fine Time In NY

July 27th, 2007

I was just chatting with Chetly on another post and it occurred to me that I haven’t been here to cbdc in some time.

Part of my problem is seasonal … I’m always busier during the summer than any other time of year. Part of it is that I have a ton of yard work that I do, but it’s primarily because of the work that I do, and the fact that my workload increases so much at the end of the school year. The workload stays heavy until the beginning of the next.

I didn’t realize it had been so long since I’d been here … it feels like a grave site. I’m going to work on getting myself organized a bit better, so I can pay attention to Shiawassee again. I’ve spent all my time over at BFM, caught up in state level issues. Learned a lot, but I don’t like being away from the county. I’m totally missing the budget process. :( So if I have any readers left at all here, I apologize for just disappearing like that.

Back to my title though, right now I’m in New York having a fine vacation. The trip over was interesting. (We drove) Canadian border officers (don’t know what they’re actually called) are very nice. Ours are nasty. We were in line to get into Canada for about 5 minutes. We looked over to the Canada -> America side, and they were backed up quite a ways. Then we got to the New York entry and we were in line for about 45 minutes. The officer working the booth was really rude when we finally got up there.

Hey, it’s not my fault the towers were attacked. I didn’t elect the idiot president who would rather read that pet goat book than read his daily briefings about Osama Bin Laden. And no, I didn’t bring anything in from Canada. Not the universal health care, not the good roads, not the gay rights, AND I’m neither a Muslim nor a trial lawyer. So let me into my country, you giant A-hole.

Sorry but the guy was a real jerk. (No, I don’t feel safer just because he was mean)

Probably won’t be any better trying to get back into Michigan either.

Well, anyway … Lots of interesting stuff to see around here. I just picked up a camera (apparently it’s possible to get a better picture if you’re not using a cell phone) and we’ll be off to get some pics later.

I got some cellphone pics over the fold, if you want to check them out … (not very good) …

Democrats Support The Fairness Doctrine

July 6th, 2007

Note: This piece was submitted by guest author Stephen Crockett, host of Democratic Talk Radio.

Corporate Media pundits and sell-out Democratic personalities are denouncing a return to the Fairness Doctrine standards in broadcasting eliminated by the Reagan Administration. They are falling into a trap set by the Republican Right and the largest corporations in America. Essentially, they are letting Republican political spin set the agenda for “acceptable” political views.

Grassroots Democratic activists do want a return to the Fairness Doctrine and Equal Time provisions in broadcasting. Private business owners are using without charge the public airwaves. These businesses are making huge profits by using public assets that belong to all American citizens. They owe us a public obligation to present diverse opinions and provide balanced public programming.

Governor Granholm Announces $25 Million For Cities Of Promise

July 5th, 2007

Another shameless leftyblog plug…

Governor Granholm Announces $25 Million For Cities Of Promise

Governor Granholm announced Tuesday that the Michigan State Housing Development Authority will fund up to $25 million over the next four years to help eliminate blight in her eight “Cities of Promise.”

The cities targeted are Detroit, Pontiac, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Flint, Benton Harbor, Saginaw and Muskegon Heights. These cities were identified based on conditions of declining population, extreme poverty, loss of industry and jobs, crumbling infrastructure and blighted neighborhoods.

Cities of Promise Initiative is a five year program that Governor Granholm kicked off in 2006. The program has the following goals:

Independence Day

July 5th, 2007

Pardon the shameless leftyblog plug, but BFM isn’t on the blogroll yet …

Independence Day

I’m not very good at holiday posts. Especially holidays like the 4th, or Memorial Day. They bring on this feeling that I have to write the best post of my life to pay tribute to what we celebrate. Our country. Our freedom. Our independence. Our soldiers.

I’m not very good at it. I sit in front of blank screen for hours, berating myself for not being able to pump out something as simple as what the holiday means to me.

So today I didn’t even try. Today I’m taking a different route … I’m going to ask you to think about independence a little differently. To do that, I’ll start with my story.

Another Fire In Owosso

July 4th, 2007

I’m sorry to say that there is another fire in Owosso today.

There’s a thread on this in the Shiawassee Forums here.

And Bob Wilcox has a slideshow here.

Our thoughts are with the victims and the responders as they deal with yet another fire.

Why We Love The Gov

July 1st, 2007

Cross-posted at BFM

I came across an interesting LSJ article this morning, which underscored some of the points we’ve been making at BFM.

First I’m going to say how irritated I am that it’s an LSJ article … I’m still mad at them.  So, I’m going to link the article because I’m referencing it, but I’m asking that you ignore their ads and not click on any links there.  In fact if you have to interact with the site at all, just leave a little graffiti in their forums, as to what jerks they are.  And if you read the article, pause between paragraphs to curse the LSJ and all that they stand for.

Thanks.

Ok, now for the substance of the article …

The article is Michigan: Good news starting to balance the bad, by Phil Power, and it talks about what may be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Power doesn’t make it easy on those of us looking for good news … first he takes us through the bad news … the job loss, the increase in unemployment, and the decline in Michigan’s GDP.  Finally, he mentions that a recent poll of Michigan residents  indicated that 300,000 to 600,000 of us are thinking about leaving.

But there’s some good news in there … Power quotes Dana Johnson, the economic chief at Comerica:

Michigan’s economic weakness was confined to just three industries - manufacturing, construction and government. They play a disproportionate role in this state’s “misery index.” Together, those three sectors accounted for more than 80 per cent of Michigan’s net declines from 2003 to 2006, even though they only made up around 35 per cent of the state’s GDP.

That makes sense … manufacturing has been exported, building is down, and government is under attack.

Governor Granholm Signs Interpreter Bill

June 30th, 2007

Cross posted at bloggingformichigan.com

The Deaf Edge has a post on the new law signed by Governor Granholm.

The legislation requires employers, state and local governments, public and private schools, hospitals, restaurants, and other entities providing services to the public, to provide effective communication services to all.  The law also requires that reasonable notice be given to the entity if such accomidation is required.

The legislation also defines a “qualified” interpreter as a person who is certified through the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or by the Division of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DODHH) in the Department of Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG).

BFM Migrates To Soapblox

June 30th, 2007

Some of you may have noticed that I’ve been working with ‘Z’ over at BFM. We recently moved the site from the WordPress platform to Soapblox.

As a result there may be some technical issues to work out. If you subscribed via RSS you may have to update your feedreader. (http://bloggingformichigan.com/feed). We may also lose our regular spot in the google blog alerts … :( … hopefully we can get that back.

Things have been a little quiet around cbdc because I’ve been spending my ‘blogging time’ on the migration. Z isn’t that technically inclined …

But things will be back to normal here soon. I have some interesting things coming up for Shiawassee readers, and I’m going to bring over a couple of state level posts that may be of interest to a few of our locals.

BFM is a progressive blog that focuses on state issues, and welcomes progressive dialogue. Lately we have been focused primarily on the state budget issues (which are just infuriating). Check it out … http://bloggingformichigan.com.

(Chetly, I haven’t been ignoring you on that LSJ thread … I will return to smack you down ;) )

(please take that in the friendly-rivalry, light-hearted spirit in which it was intended)

Cushingberry To Visit Shiawassee Dems Tonight

June 26th, 2007

State Representative George Cushingberry, Jr. will be speaking at the Shiawassee Dems’ June meeting tonight. Cushingberry is Chair of the Michigan House Appropriations Committee and will be speaking on the State of Michigan Budget.

Cushingberry will begin at 7pm.

The June meeting begins at 6pm and will adjourn prior to the speaker’s presentation.

The public is encouraged to attend to listen to the presentation.

According to MIRS, a subscription only Lansing news service, Republican Senator Mike Bishop has targeted $1.8 billion in cuts, in order to balance the budget. The cuts include the one time sale or lease of the state lottery, a moratorium on new state projects, labor and wage concessions on public works projects, freezing the earned income tax credit, eliminating welfare coverage for 43,000 identified recipients, privatizing prison healthcare and other services, allowing mental health assessments via teleconference, and consolidating the DNR and the DEQ. There are many other targeted cuts, most of which attempt to cut wages and benefits for state employees and public school teachers.

The Shiawassee Dems meet on the 4th Tuesday of every month at the Corunna City Hall. All are welcome to attend.

Gay Pride Rally In Owosso

June 23rd, 2007

This from the forums:

Alright everyone!! Today is the day.. Lets get our voices heard and let the Hot Spot and Owosso know that discrimination will not be tolerated!!!! Lets go and protest and have fun being ourselves tonight!! I’m excited! We protest tonight at 6:00pm at the hot spot parking lot and sidewalks down town here in Owosso on Washington Street!!! Hope to see all there and sharing your support!! Much appreciation!!

This is a follow up to this thread, where the author describes being kicked out of the Hot Spot due to her sexual orientation. The Hot Spot has since told her that she is welcome to come back.

(I do not know the Hot Spot’s side of the story on that)

I Stand With The State Workers

June 21st, 2007

Color me really, really mad.

I stand with the State of Michigan employees who just had their information published in the LSJ database. (No, I’m not linking it because I don’t want anyone to use it)

Basically, you can go to this database, enter a name, and get the employee’s info. Salary, work location, title, date hired.

I’m disgusted.
