Owosso Public Schools Lawsuit

February 14th, 2008

There are a couple of threads over on the Shiawassee forums that should be of interest to anyone with kids in the OPS system. They revolve around the lawsuit brought against OPS by Jim McAvoy, former Technology Director for Owosso Schools. If I’m reading the info correctly, the lawsuits allege that McAvoy was dismissed due to his insistence that OPS file a police report over an incident in which a substitute teacher was caught viewing pornography on a school computer.

The police report was eventually filed, but not until after McAvoy had been non-disciplinary paid administrative leave. McAvoy alleges that the police report did not contain all of the information. As an example, McAvoy cites the fact that Assistant Superintendent Gary Bredahl admitted to Board member Jim Howe in an email on March 30, 2007 that the Emerson students viewed inappropriate images. This information was not included in the police report.

The substitute teacher in question is no longer allowed to teach in Genesee, Shiawassee, Clinton, Ingham, and Eaton Counties.

Perry, Morrice Educators Thank MEA

February 13th, 2008

If you recall, there was a ballot issue regarding the consolidation of the Perry and Morrice school districts, back in January. The consolidation was defeated with 73% voting against it. I didn’t follow the issue that closely, and I didn’t realize that the MEA was such an important player in defeating the measure:

MEA stood by their side throughout the campaign, providing legal and communications advice, daily guidance from UniServ directors and answering myriad questions. “Anything we asked for, we received,” Perry EA President Dave Myron said. “You don’t realize how much help MEA provides until you really need it.” Added Morrice EA President Cathy Edington: “The support we received from MEA was awesome. I’m proud of my state association and our local associations for helping defeat this consolidation attempt.”

That’s from the MEA Voice Today.

Congrats to the folks who were involved in defeating the consolidation.

Greg Gray To Stay In Owosso

February 11th, 2008

I see that Owosso Public Schools Superintendent Greg Gray is going to stay in Owosso. Not by his choice, of course … he had been hoping to become the next Superintendent for Grand Ledge Public Schools.

“Me and my wife (Chris) are both from Grand Ledge,” Gray said. “Her family and mine still live there. I love Owosso, but Grand Ledge is my hometown.”

Unfortunately he was not a finalist for that position.

I can understand Gray wanting to be closer to his family, but I’m really tired of people using Shiawassee - and Owosso in particular - as a stepping stone to other things. Didn’t this happen with another Superintendent?

I’m not into public school politics … maybe there’s a problem with OPS, that they can’t keep a Super. But I’m of the opinion that if your guy is out interviewing for other jobs, then you should start looking for someone to replace him. If I was out interviewing for other jobs, telling the press that my employer isn’t my first choice, then I’d expect my employer to dump me. Yeah, it’s expensive and time consuming to replace a Super, but isn’t it better to have one who wants to be there, and who won’t be out embarrassing the district by telling the press that his current position is not the one he wants?

  • Sheriff Makes Good On Threat To Argus

    February 5th, 2008

A couple of weeks ago, I posted an article on my hometown Sheriff, Jon Wilson. The Argus also ran an article on the Sheriff, based partially on my investigative work. At the time, Sheriff Wilson told our local paper that they would not get any more information from the department, if they ran a story about him.

Today the Sheriff made good on that threat

Before the story ran, Wilson threatened The Argus-Press, saying the paper wouldn’t receive any information from his department if it was published. He also told a reporter to be prepared to “take some responsibility.”

Sheriff’s officials confirmed a fatal traffic crash occurred Saturday morning but wouldn’t release any information. Multiple officials said a recent change in policy instituted by Wilson prohibits anyone from giving any information.

At about 4 p.m. Monday, a phone message was left for an Argus-Press reporter from an employee of the sheriff’s department stating “…this message is to notify you that if you would like any information for the press releases or any type of article you will have to FOIA them to our department.”

I tell ya what, if you wanted to point out that your local Sheriff is a bully, you couldn’t ask for a better reaction …

Sheriff - “I am not responding to the blog”

    January 26th, 2008

    Cross-posted at bfm.

The Sheriff leaned in close to the door and strained to hear the conversation on the other side. If he was quiet enough, he could just make out what they were saying. He knew them all well enough to identify them by their voices. If he was lucky, he’d make a bust.

If only he had remembered to check for the Office Manager, who was approaching him from behind.

    “Sheriff?”

He was caught. He had no choice but to act quickly. He rushed forward, burst into the room, and caught them by surprise.

It has all the makings of really bad fiction, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, it isn’t fiction. It’s the scene of the Shiawassee County Sheriff Department on the morning of April 3, 2007. It’s the beginning of the incident that led to the assault of a Deputy and a alleged conspiracy involving the Captain of the 1st District of the Michigan State Police.

Shiawassee Co Sheriff Jon Wilson isn’t terribly popular with his department. He has the distinction of having more grievances filed against him than any other Shiawassee Co Sheriff. (More, I hear, than all other previous Shiawassee Sheriffs combined.) He’s so loose-lipped that he’s considered a hazard to the Detective’s Bureau, to the point where he’s deliberately excluded from investigations. He creates a work environment that is so abusive and hostile that Deputies end up in the hospital from stress related ailments. He commands so little respect from within the department that no one would agree to be his Undersheriff. (He eventually gave the job to a magistrate)

But I digress, as I so often do when I have so much meat to chew. Back to the assault.

The picture I painted for you in the blockquote is as accurate as I can make it. Wilson was eavesdropping on the daily deputy coffee break, hoping to overhear something that he could use to ‘get’ his Deputies. Instead he ended up grabbing Lt. Mike Ash by the arm and pushing him in the hallway.

Ash immediately reported the incident to the county. He also filed a complaint with MSP Detective Sergeant Mark Pendergraff, who initiated the process of investigation.

That afternoon, the MSP 1st District Captain was incidentally visiting with Jon Wilson at office. Wilson was overheard saying that he would fire all of his Lieutenants, if necessary, to “make this go away.” The MSP Captain was heard responding, “Don’t worry, it won’t go that far.”

According to witness reports, a 1st District Detective Lieutenant contacted Pendergraff about a week after the incident, and told him not to proceed with the investigation. Pendergraff was instructed to direct the Shiawassee Deputies to conduct an internal investigation, or report to the Corunna City Police.

    Bennington Twp Violating Election Laws

    January 15th, 2008

Shiawassee Dems received a report that Bennington Twp is questioning people who do not have a photo ID. The person who reported states that he was harassed until he produced one. The worker even said, “If you don’t have a photo ID, how did you get here?”

I believe the law states that if a person does not have an ID, the election worker is supposed to ask if the voter lives in the precinct, and then ask if the voter will sign an affidavit.

Furthermore, here is a shot of the ad that ran in the Independent on Sunday:

It reads, in bold caps: “YOU MUST SHOW PICTURED ID TO VOTE”

The ad is selective: it does not inform the readers that they have the right to sign an affidavit if they do not have a photo ID.

I’m getting ready to throwdown out here.

    Testing Photo ID In Shiawassee

    January 15th, 2008

Update: - 3:15pm - The sign at Caledonia Twp Hall has been taken down. Thank you MDP for your assistance with this!

I always take election day off. There’s something about that pesky democracy thing that just demands that I be out here on the street, watching out for the voters.

So I started my day like any other election day, by heading down to the good ol’ Caledonia Twp Hall, to cast my vote for Pocket Hillary. (And for the SATA millage, which actually means more to me than the presidential primary … go figure)

And what do you think greeted me at the door?

If you can’t see through the glare, the sign reads, “PHOTO ID WILL BE REQUIRED” with the little statutory reference beneath.

No mention of the fact that you do not need to have a photo ID to vote. So basically, they turn you away at the door, if you don’t have a photo ID and you don’t know your rights.

I checked my pockets, and wuddayaknow, no photo ID. I don’t know how that happened. I didn’t do it on purpose of course. Perish the thought.

Moving on … I filled out my ballot app, and read the affidavit on the back. It leaves you with the impression that you are saying that you don’t have an ID at all .. not that you don’t have one with you. But, whatever. I gave the app to the woman at the desk.

For the sake of symbolism, let’s call her “da man”, and I’ll be “the little people”

The adventure continues over the jump

Naomi Klein on The Rise of Disaster Capitalism

    December 29th, 2007

Putting this on my reading list … The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism

In THE SHOCK DOCTRINE, Naomi Klein explodes the myth that the global free market triumphed democratically. Exposing the thinking, the money trail and the puppet strings behind the world-changing crises and wars of the last four decades, The Shock Doctrine is the gripping story of how America’s “free market” policies have come to dominate the world– through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries.

On Blogs, Censorship, Criticism, And Content

    December 27th, 2007

Oh for crying out loud. This is getting boring.

I am writing this post because of these diaries here and here, and because I received an email today that was full of accusations similar to those resulting from the ML diaries.

This isn’t a Shiawassee post, or a political post. If you aren’t familiar with this weird little world of blogging then you probably won’t know what I’m talking about. In that case, it’s a waste of your time to continue reading. For the love of all that is Holy, stop reading now.

    I’m serious. Turn back now.

    Help Us Fight Muscular Dystrophy

    December 1st, 2007

    Hey everyone, meet my boss.

Between work, golf, & golf, he doesn’t have a lot of spare time. That’s why I think it’s so awesome that he spends it on supporting his favorite causes.

MDA serves people in our community with neuromuscular disease by providing clinics, support groups, assistance with the purchase and repair of wheelchairs, braces and communication devices, and summer camp for kids. MDA also funds research grants to help find treatments and cures for some 43 neuromuscular diseases that affect people of all ages, right here in our community.

    Can you chip in?

    Here’s what your money buys:

    * $25 provides an annual flu shot for one person
    * $85 funds one minute of research
    * $100 funds a support group session
    * $200 covers a clinical diagnostic exam
    * $650 sends a child to MDA summer camp for a week
    * $2,000 goes toward purchase of a wheelchair, a set of leg braces or a communication device

I know, I know … everyone wants your money at this time of year. But if you could spare just a little for the MDA, it would make my boss very happy. And when the boss is happy, I’m happy.

And really, don’t you all want me to be happy?

    *chirp*

Ok, fine. Forget about my happiness. Just donate because it’s a good cause.

Allegations Against Sheriff Continue To Surface

    November 24th, 2007

If you recall, I wrote a little about the Sheriff earlier this year; here and here. I never got anywhere with my inquiries into what’s going on in that department, because I couldn’t get any info from anyone. But the Sheriff’s recent complaints about his $3,000 raise seems to have been the last straw.

It all started when the County Commissioners started handing out raises like candy. (From the bend over & grab your ankles department: Did you know they had to dip into county savings to give out the raises? More on that move later) In the end, the Sheriff didn’t get the raise he expected. From his letter to the Argus:

    Notice on site design

    November 23rd, 2007

Ok, finally going to switch it over & leave it that way …

Sorry if it looks goofy when you get here. (Should just be temporary!)

    Ok, I think it’s done …

    For now, anyway.

    Here’s the layout:

In our left column, which is to your right :) we have the welcome menu, that addresses all things Christine. This is for credibility purposes: I want people to know who I am and how to contact me. The media page is just a matter of bragging. I have no excuse for this.

Beneath the welcome to cbdc menu, we have the most recent posts, the Shiawassee County links, and my blogroll. The Shiawassee links are not all official sites; they are sites of interest to someone who may be looking for info on our county. As for the blogroll, it was dynamic on the last design. It was awesome, because it was pulled in directly from my feed-reader public folder — but I can’t get the style to work with this theme. So I just went to my feed-reader, exported my roll into an opml file, saved it to my desktop, logged back in to WP, and uploaded/imported the file. Then I merely deleted all 92 blogs that weren’t in the public folder of my feed-reader. Piece o’ cake.

    (Details for blog wonks)

In the right column, which really is the right column, we have the search function, and recent comments. These are two of the most popular features on the site. Beneath comments we have the miniblog (aka sideblog), which allows me to post little announcements without cluttering up my main page. I haven’t used it in a while, but I will either start using it or I will remove it from the blog. Beneath that we have “in the forums”, which is an rss feed of the activity in the Shiawassee County Forums. Finally, the meta box, where you can pick up a feed or login/logout. (You don’t have to login to use the site or leave a comment)

I’ll probably add some ads back in. If you love me, you’ll click on them.

Finally, I updated the pages in the welcome menu. The About Me page no longer has “Breaking! As of January 11 ….”

(note to self: check static pages more than once every 11 months …)

    My Apologies To Leon Drolet

    November 21st, 2007

I wandered over to Chet Zarko’s blog today and found his article on the latest round of Zarko v Lessenberry. I check Zarko every day, but I didn’t follow the Lessenberry stuff, so I wasn’t familiar with the history of the issue. So I followed the links in his diary, and eventually, I came to this:

I hate self-hating Ukrainians most of all.  Obviously you were a follower of  Petlura, who has transferred his/her allegiance to a gay imitation fascist with  a pink pig as a last resort. I understand you now.

That’s Jack Lessenberry, on Chet’s defense of Leon Drolet.

Admittedly, that seems to come from private email, not from Lessenberry’s published articles. (The relevant published article is here). People tend to speak differently in private, and I don’t think the responsibility for private speech is as great as it is for public speech. And as much as I’m willing to scold Chet right now for publishing private correspondence, I find it hard to believe that Jack Lessenberry didn’t expect his email to be published. Especially since Chet appears to have been publishing the emails as they came in, and there were several hours between them.

So the fact is, Jack used the word “gay” as a slur. What’s worse than an “imitation fascist?” Apparently, a “gay imitation fascist”.

    Nice.

And over on Michigan Liberal, we have the comments in this thread, to which Leon responds:

Enjoy the homophobic attacks, and join the Rev Fred Phelps “church”…sounds like some michiganliberal posters would be a perfect fit.

I don’t want it to appear that those comments are representative of the Mich Lib community as a whole. That was just the comments of a couple of people. But out of the hundreds of MichLib users, only 3 people complained.

I didn’t complain either, and I should have. It’s just that, I’ve complained about so many things at Michigan Liberal that it just doesn’t matter what I have to say over there. I didn’t see the point in getting into another fight. It would just be Christine bitching about something again. Although unlike the fights over Saul Anuzis or sock puppets, this fight would have had some value. Ah. Hindsight.

So, in light of Pastor John’s article, and after seeing Lessenberry’s stuff (which I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t see until today), I feel that I should say something. Better late than never, I guess.

First of all, back to Chet’s article; I agree with Chet that the editor of the Metro Times should condemn the use of the word ‘gay’ as a slur. I’m not thrilled with the idea of an editor getting involved in a writer’s personal correspondence, but an employer certainly has an interest in how an employee’s conduct reflects on the business. (assuming Jack is an employee(?))

Second, adding “gay” to the long list of names that Leon legitimately deserves to be called (for abusing our democracy), is wrong. If you’ve done that in the past, please don’t do that again.

Third, to Leon, I apologize. Not for what anyone else has said, but for what I haven’t said. If I see something like that in the future, I’ll speak up. I would rip you apart if you were doing that to someone else, and it’s wrong for me to be silent when it’s being done to you.

    What is Judge Clatterbaugh Hiding?

    November 13th, 2007

I was talking to a County Commissioner last night, who told me that he recently had some questions about the invoices being submitted to the county by a particular attorney. These were reasonable questions; for example, one document included a note “see attached”, but there was no attachment.

So he submits requests to Judge Clatterbaugh (D) and Judge Clarkson (R), asking for more information on the tasks performed by the attorney. Basically, he wanted to see what the county was paying for.

    Reasonable request? I think so.

    Judge Ward Clarkson
, to his credit, complied with the request. No problem. No delays.

Judge James Clatterbaugh on the other hand, was indignant. “I signed off on this, there shouldn’t be any questions about it …” He refused to give up the information.

    *sigh*

What is the problem? Why can’t the commissioner have the information? Especially information that is as straightforward as the supporting documentation that is referenced in an invoice?

    I support Shiawassee Deputies

It’s just $2.99 for the hottest 10″ of vinyl this side of the Shiawassee River. (Doesn’t matter which side you’re on) No markup; I’m not making anything on them. That’s the Cafepress base price.

Campaign Finance Complaint Filed Against Jon Stryker

    November 8th, 2007

Chetly Zarko, of Zarko Research & Consulting, has filed a campaign finance complaint against Jon Stryker. The complaint alleges that,

…there is reasonable cause to believe that contribution data is not accurate or should be substantiated with an actual paper trail (the Amended reports are extremely inconsistent and suggest that the accounts are highly fluid).

Chet reported his research on Stryker’s contributions here.

Outside Lansing is Chet’s most recent blog. He also publishes at Power, Politics, & Money and Oakland Politics.

    October 22nd, 2007

Switched the theme back temporarily, just because of some coding things.
