‘Never’ Does Not Exist is a series that I wrote in 2006 and is the basis of a book I am writing on the revitalization of Shiawassee County. The theme of Never is that Shiawassee residents need to reclaim their local governments use the them as tools to bring prosperity to the county.
The title is inspired by State Rep Richard Ball, who said “We will never have the prosperity of the 90′s. Michigan just has to learn to live with less.” This is something that really rubbed me the wrong way, and I have never forgotten it. There is no surer way to fail than to accept the idea that success is impossible. Shiawassee cannot and should not depend on leaders who do not believe that they can do anything other than help us live with less.
Not long after Dick Ball was sworn into office, I watched Fritz Lang’s Woman In The Moon. WITM is a silent movie … a classic among sci-fi and/or Fritz Lang buffs. It’s the first movie to predict the weightlessness of space, the shape of a rocket, and the countdown to liftoff. It opens with this still …
40 years after the release of Woman In The Moon, and 7 years before the death of Fritz Lang, Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.
Revitalizing our communities is not rocket science. It’s a matter of seeking new ideas, trying new plans, and learning from our mistakes. We cannot afford to believe that we will fail. We cannot afford to “learn to live with less.”
