Just want to give another shout out to our awesome commissioners. From the AP:

The number of Michigan households getting food stamps has risen 53 percent in the past five years, with one in eight state residents now aided by the nutrition assistance program, authorities say.

In all, 590,600 state households got food stamps in March, the Michigan Department of Human Services says. The households include 1.26 million people, or 12.5 percent of the state’s 10.07 million residents.

Nationwide, 27.7 million people received food stamps in January — or 9.2 percent of the nation’s 300 million people.

So now is a great time to cash in on hunger.

  1. Christine, I just found your blog via MLive blogs - that’s AWESOME that you’re blogging from Shiawassee County.

I grew up between Byron and Bancroft, and even though I live north of Flint now I still consider myself a country girl. ;)

Adding you to my feed reader now. :D

As I’m going through my old posts, adjusting them for the new software & theme, I found the link to Dan Stewart’s blog - http://web.mac.com/danthemanstewart/http%3A__web.mac.com_danthemanstewart/Blog/Blog.html

    From his Feb 14 article:

Excitement, relief & gratefulness are but a few of the emotions I have now that HB 5992 has passed. PA 375 gave local commissioners the ability to waive fees for non-profit groups. This was a long hard fought battle for me. This process took over a year to accomplish but in the end “justice was served”.

The commissioners passed the waiving of the fees unanimously on 2-12-09. The waiving of the inspection and licensing fees were made effective 1-1-09 so that retroactivity allows non-profits who have already paid this year to obtain a refund.

I’m glad the matter is settled, and I appreciate the work that was put into this. But, I still say that they were cowards for not doing the right thing to begin with.
