Owosso Public Schools Lawsuit

February 14th, 2008 | by christine |

There are a couple of threads over on the Shiawassee forums that should be of interest to anyone with kids in the OPS system. They revolve around the lawsuit brought against OPS by Jim McAvoy, former Technology Director for Owosso Schools. If I’m reading the info correctly, the lawsuits allege that McAvoy was dismissed due to his insistence that OPS file a police report over an incident in which a substitute teacher was caught viewing pornography on a school computer.

The police report was eventually filed, but not until after McAvoy had been non-disciplinary paid administrative leave. McAvoy alleges that the police report did not contain all of the information. As an example, McAvoy cites the fact that Assistant Superintendent Gary Bredahl admitted to Board member Jim Howe in an email on March 30, 2007 that the Emerson students viewed inappropriate images. This information was not included in the police report.

The substitute teacher in question is no longer allowed to teach in Genesee, Shiawassee, Clinton, Ingham, and Eaton Counties.
