A few months ago I mentioned that Shiawassee was supposed to be targeted for Sunshine Week. Basically this is a matter of submitting a bunch of FOIA requests and seeing what pops up. We never went through with that, but I did finally do a little test of my own.
Last week I sent the following to County Clerk Lauri Braid:
Under the Freedom of Information Act, as amended, I am requesting a copy of all grievances filed against the Shiawassee County Sheriff Department and/or Sheriff Jon Wilson, since January 1, 2007. This includes grievances filed by any union or non-represented employee.
As a result, I received a copy of the grievance filed by Sgt. Harkness.
Unfortunately this did not comply with the request.
As of June 11, there are 7 pending grievances that have been filed since Jan 1, and multiple reprimand grievances were filed within one week. These grievances were neither provided nor denied.
Yep … 7. Way less than 30, way more than the 1 he sent me.

Christine,
I have recently been introduced to this site. I am pleased to announce it is drawing attention where it is desperately needed. I sincerely hope that you continue to seek information into the trouble at the Sheriff Dept. There are a lot of good people in dire need of help there.
Here is a question for you to ponder: What law enforcement agency did the Sheriff employee report what he felt was an assault and battery to? If you answer correctly, I’m sure you will spur some serious discussion.
