McAvoy On Sick Leave
May 31st, 2007 | by christine |The Argus Press reported today that Margaret McAvoy has been on sick leave for several weeks and it is unknown when she will return. (She is rumored to be returning on June 4)
I heard about this some time ago, but I don’t blog the personal business of county employees, and personal health seems like personal business. Besides, I write about Margaret enough.
I just wanted to comment quickly on the county insurance.
The county pays premiums for insurance, just like any other employer who offers health care. The insurance policy guarantees that certain medical expenses are covered, just like any other insurance policy.
If the covered medical costs exceed what the county pays in premiums, then the county has to pay it.
In other words, say the county pays $100K per year in insurance premiums for all of its employees. If the insurance company pays out $150K in one year, then Shiawassee picks up the extra $50K. Hopefully there are enough healthy people in the county to cover the sick people.
So that’s just a primer on county medical insurance.
And I hope Margaret is ok and gets well soon.
But I will say that if she’s been gone for this long and the county has been running smoothly, then why do we need a county administrator?

I never thought we needed one anyway.
That’s what we elect the commissioners to do.
At most, the commissioners need an ‘assistant’ as in a ’secretary’ and that is not at aa CEO salary. That office needs to go, way too much budget there.
