Fire In Owosso

April 10th, 2007 | by christine |

In the Shiawassee forums this morning, there is a report from the Owosso City Firefighters on a fire at 315 Cass. Note: The OCFD has been criticized in the past for bringing a fire truck on ambulance calls. They do this so that there are more than 2 people to help with the patient. This is for the firefighters’ safety.

Our new procedure of taking an engine with the ambulance on priority 1 & 2 medical calls paid off huge today. We were working a medical call on Dewey St. when a call came in for a structure fire at 315 W. Cass St. The ambulance stayed on Dewey St. while our engine, a pumper truck, responded to the fire. The fire was dispatched at 1657, enroute 1657 and on scene 1658.

Please keep in mind that we had 5 firefighters on duty today. Two were on Dewey St. which left three to respond to Cass St.

315 W. Cass St. is a three story duplex. When our engine arrived flames were blowing out of an east side second story window and smoke was coming from the roof.. It was unknown if the dwelling was occupied or not. Capt. Arthur Hart was on scene command. Capt. Hart called for off-duty Owosso City firefighters and mutual aid from Owosso Township Fire. Search and interior attack took place immediately. 8-10 Owosso Township firemen and a total of 13 Owosso City were on scene within about 20 minutes.

We were told nobody was in the dwelling by an occupant who arrived at the scene,

The fire was stopped within a 1/2 hour and was limited to a bedroom and contents. All firefighting efforts were done within an hour. Salvage and overhaul were completed shortly thereafter. There was a fair amount of smoke damage, especially on the second floor. Water damage was kept at a minimum. We used approx. 3000 gallons of water.

Smoke detector status– We did not hear any smoke detectors sounding during firefighting operations.

Saved-1 guinea pig (a little cold and frightened) 2 parakeets

No injuries reported. Cause of the fire is unknown.

Thanks to Owosso Township Fire. The manpower is always appreciated. Owosso Police, thanks for blocking the streets and keeping gawker traffic to a minimum.

Thanks to all of our firefighters, and as always, we are glad that no one was hurt.
