Live Blogging State of the State

Watching on WFUM Channel 28.

Figures I’d have to hear from Skubick. Good God he sucks. “This is the Governor’s most challenging speech ever, because of this, that, and the other thing, and I’m willing to say anything to make her look bad.”

And let me just say that after seeing John Cherry speak at the last convention, I really like him.

Shut up Skubick.

Lots of Democratic applause when the Governor says “Speaker Dillon”.

Governor starts out thanking our armed forces. Standing ovation for them. Good job.

“The world around us has changed and it is not changing back.”

    “Trade agreements go unenforced.”

It’s good that she mentioned trade agreements again. Trade isn’t bad … unfettered free trade is bad for us. It’s important that people understand the difference.

“Will we invest in the people or will we fail them?” “We must choose success for the people.”

Heck even the Republicans stood up for that one.

“The next Michigan, an unrivaled place, to live, work, and learn.”

Here she lists her accomplishments, and yet CRAPTOOLS like Skubick will say she did nothing.

Speed up diversification in 4 ways:

    1. Go anywhere, do anything … pursue more international investment in Michigan. Take advantage of the global economy and not be victimized by it. Sweet.

    2. Increase investment in marketing Michigan for tourism and business. Excellent … and by the way, thanks alot John Engler for closing our trade offices in Japan. Dick.

    3. Christine doesn’t know this one because she was chatting on gabbly. :( Oh yeah, and that last part about Engler was all me.

    4. Pursue growth in life sciences, advanced manufacturing, homeland security, alternative energy.

Alternative energy critical to economy, security, environment.

I like this … this industry is perfect for Shiawassee.

Gov announced an agressive 3 year program to bring more alternative energy companies to Michigan. Very exciting for our sleepy little town.

By 2008 we will have installed 1,000 ethanol & bio-diesel pumps across the state.

“Michigan can be the state that breaks our nation’s dependence on foreign oil.” Well how long before someone at the Detroit News claims that the Gov just declared war on the auto companies?

    “We are one Michigan.”

“Governing Magazine has said Michigan is tied for the 3rd best managed state in the nation” due to streamlining.

“Michigan is rated as the top state in the nation for using technology to serve Michigan.”

    That’s right!

“Michigan counties, townships, etc. must do more to share & consolidate resources.”

Now you’re singing my song, Gov.

“When they show us they have saved and consolidated, we’ll show them the money.” Well isn’t that a big ‘O’ for the Mackinac Center for Public Policy?

“educating people on the front end of life rather than incarcerating them on the back end.”

    standing ovation on both sides.

“we all must create a culture of learning that is unprecedented in Michigan’s history.”

“I refuse to slash school funding in the middle of this year.”

Love it when the Gov talks like that. Again, standing ovation from both sides.

Education ideas are good. Require students to attend Kindergarten and attend school until they’re 18 years old.

And here the Republicans are trying to turn the state red. Education really sets them back on that one.

While you are unemployed … get college now, get a degree now, and we’ll pay for it!

    WOW. WOW.

    “No worker left behind.”

standing ovation on both sides. Got a good chunk of the Republicans on that.

“the last legislature made a bad situation worse.”

The SBT repeal left a $2 billion hole in our budget.

“The deficit we face today is of a wholly different magnitude. No cyclical upturn in the economy will erase it.”

“another round of budget cutting alone cannot solve the budget crisis.”

I suspect the taxes are coming now.

“But I will not cut the things that will make Michigan competitive. Nor will I devastate our most vulnerable citizens.”

Well the Mackinac Center won’t like that.

    LOL. Luv your comments.

And I want the names of the happy assholes who clapped when she mentioned the SBT elimination- the move that has left business in limbo for months now- did they think they were cute or clever by doing that? How disrespectful to the Guv and to our state.

    Children.

Some of my comments are missing.

The reason I know this is that when the Gov was talking about marketing Michigan, I mentioned the trade office in Japan that Engler closed, so he could put $.02 per taxpayer back into the private sector. Of course I expressed my opinion of Engler at that time.

That was before the comment ‘that bit about Engler was all me’ …

WP is really giving me trouble these days. :(

Great State of the State, but I did like last year’s better.

I’m looking for it in Windows Media- I’d love to get the ending up on YouTube. She really got rolling there…

So far no luck- just the Skooby version on Real, and apparently I can’t edit or capture that without buying something. Bah.

Wondering this morning about the “hundreds of millions” in cuts she mentioned.

    Who? Where?

I guess the answer comes tomorrow.

I don’t know about cuts (actually I do know some), but here are my top 3 ideas for revenue:

    1. 300% revenue tax on any think tank that uses the Michigan word “Mackinac” in the name

    2. $100,000,000 fee to any think tank that attempts to remove the Michigan word “Mackinac” from their name

    3. 50% naysayer tax on any publication that acts as an arm of propaganda for any think tank that uses the Michigan word “Mackinac” in the name.

I’m just saying, if a think tank is going to use the word “Mackinac”, the state of Michigan ought to get something out of it.
