Today we heard the sad news that Senator Stafford passed.
Senator Stafford was a champion for the environment and education. (you’ve heard of the ‘Stafford Loan’) He also called for unity in the divisive 2000 elections, and upon Vermont’s legalizing civil unions for same sex couples, said:
“I consider that love is one of the great forces in our society and especially in our state of Vermont … It occurs to me that even if a same-sex couple unites in love, what harm does that do anybody or any society?”
Senator Stafford wasn’t afraid to stand up to his party when he thought they were wrong. This was especially evident when he led the successful effort to override President Reagan’s veto of environmental legislation.
Too bad we don’t have more Senators like this Republican.
