Yesterday in the Flint Journal, Linda Angelo appears to have credited the Democrats’ win to the anger against President Bush.
This seems to ignore the fact that Republicans Dick Ball, Mike Rogers, and Dave Camp all won Shiawassee County. Why did anger against Bush and the war trickle down to the commissioners, but completely skip Ball and the US Congressmen, who, by the way, march in goose-step lockstep with Bush?
Please.
I like Angelo’s reporting, and I’m glad to have The Flint Journal out here keeping an eye on our politics. But having covered Shiawassee County for a good long time, Ms. Angelo should know that there’s plenty of reason right here in Shiawassee for our victories. The new fees, the animal control blunders, the problems with the drain office, etc.
We worked hard in Shiawassee to get out our vote and to protect our vote. We spoke out against the things that we thought were wrong. And Shiawassee residents are a little more savvy than they get credit for. They understood what the McAvoy situation was all about. They don’t like what’s going on with Bernie Butcher and Gary Holzhausen. They wanted change, and we gave it to them.
Our local party worked hard, and we worked smart. How about some props for the locals?

Thank you for this post Christine. It is too bad that the reporting had to be so superficial. We did work hard in Shiawassee County; our candidates worked hard in Shiawassee County; the Democratic Commissioner Candidates had clear messages in Shiawassee County. But putting emphasis on the win, and the depth behind our candidates and their wins would take far too nmuch time. It is much easier to take short whining sound bites and turn that into a quick answer. Really disappointing, and really low caliber reporting.
