Quick Reflections On The Debate

What the Gov did right:

She was assertive. She was sure to answer the challenges / accusations that were thrown her way, and she made sure that she got the time to answer them. Dick seemed much much weaker in this regard. He seemed to answer challenges only when he was invited.

She was conversational when it was appropriate. When Dick said “I have a plan to replace the SBT” she said “You do?” (personally I feel she was channeling ALL MICHIGAN DEMOCRATS when she said that). She also directly asked “Don’t you own 12 million shares of that company?”

She seemed well in command of the facts. Even if she got something wrong (she might have, I didn’t fact check), she didn’t have to stammer for anything.

Overall, she presented herself as a leader, which was a good contrast to Dick going on about how he would be the leader.

What Dick did right:

He did a good job pivoting back to the concept of leadership. He made a good effort to drive that theme home. However, he didn’t seem like he had the confidence or effectiveness to be a leader. There was a huge difference between when he was rehearsed and when he was ad-libbing. His body language didn’t match up to what he was saying.

He was pretty up front about his pro-life & anti gay positions. I was half-heartedly hoping he’d try to cover that up.

I can’t rewatch the debate now (Heroes is on :) ) but when I do, I will update with specifics. However, I ask viewers & voters to ask themselves these questions as they consider the debate:

  • Which person understands the criminal justice system in Michigan?
  • Which person would you send to negotiate with foreign leaders? (and which one would embarrass you?)
  • Which person understands the importance of the middle class?
  • Which person respects the importance of the auto industry?
  • Which person is more likely to fight for fair trade policies?
  • That’s all for now. I encourage all Shiawasseeans (that’s a word on christinebarry.com) to revisit my State of the State review: What Shiawassee Should Learn From Governor Granholm.

I felt very good after hearing her tonight. I was worried that she had the same person who wrote “… in five years, you’re gonna be blown away…” helping her tonight. I never liked the thought of my leader speaking to our Legislative body like she was at a high school commencement ceremony, even if they are all infantile, immature, hissy-fit throwing, prone to temper tantrum, babies. oooohhh… was that my outside typing again??

Overall, I was very impressed. He had too many buzz phrases, and no real information. I know he kept talking about leadership, but gave absolutely ZIPPO in how he could or would lead to a different result?

Anyway, I am very happy… very encouraged… and very energized.

      GO DEMS!!!!

I thought she did great, though the spoils go to the winner of the coverage, not the winner of the actual debate.

By the way I liked the State of the State address. I thought it presented her as a strong leader. The 5 year comment, in context, was ok. It sucks being taken out of context, but most things do.

What I liked about the S of S speech was that it didn’t seem like she was talking to wonks. It was designed for regular people. And she timed it perfectly so that as soon as she was done speaking, people would tune into the game. No one stuck around for the GOP response. :)

Enough about that, the debate was great. Here’s hoping for 2 more debate wins for the Gov.
