First question, Mr. DeVos, Should there be a law against lying in campaign ads, and would your opponent be in trouble with this law?
What the hell is that?
Is this how this debate is going to be?
Next: How much impact can a MI Governor have on the state’s economy?
@Dick – whoa, he practiced this question, much more smooth on the delivery, he’s not on the defensive here. You can sure tell the difference between this & the last minute or so, when he was attempting to defend his record of jobs at Amway.
@the Gov – 700% on avg. more automotive jobs than any other state … good answer, encourages the public to go to the website to grab her plan. Diversify .. good .. (yes these are my random thoughts) .. always good to talk about diversification. Reframe the question – “why & how did we get here?” Good job making the point that Govs don’t negotiate trade agreements. “My opponent has fought & negotiated for unfair trade agreements that I’m sure have helped him & I’m sure have helped Amway.” Excellent. Excellent. “My opponent has supported those policies that have hurt Michigan.”
@Dick – “I didn’t hear any caveats when you took office that you couldn’t get it done.” Well that line was ok. Clinton was the architect of NAFTA.
@Gov – Clinton brought enforcement actions under NAFTA, Bush has not.
Would you have signed legislation to abolish the Detroit Board of Ed?
@Gov – no.
@Dick – no.

Do you believe the suburbs have an adequate voice on the Board?
@Gov – under the constitution they have an adequate voice. (I’m not keeping up well on this particular question … I’ll let this one go & catch up later …)
however under this question both have pivoted back to jobs.
“CEO of Amway” — keep repeating it, and Tom Delay too, oh yeah.
Is that true, Mr. DeVos, did you buy special treatment for Amway?
@Dick – not true, I went to DC to fight for MI jobs. Provision in the US tax law, would’ve sent jobs overseas, I went to DC to change that and we had a penalty avoidance. (huh?)

Why are people poor?
@Gov – challenges to the auto industry, that’s why I was proud to raise min. wage, give ppl at poverty level an EITC, make sure that everyday citizens know that I’m fighting for you. Clearly we’ve got to do more, but this is why my econ. plan is so promising …
Excellent pivot back to plan, jobs fund, diversity. alternative energy (Christine’s interjection: Shiawassee County should be the leader in AE, imho). Workforce re-training, teaming up with community colleges.
Is the middle class in MI in danger?
@Dick – I find it amazing to hear the Gov say that the plan is working when the ppl of MI aren’t. Young ppl leaving because they don’t see opportunity here. Hope & opportunity elsewhere. I spoke in Marquette, blah blah, someone closed a family business, dad is in CA. We’re very much at risk, that’s why we need leadership that understands job creation.
@Gov – that’s also why we have to change the mindset about what will fix our problems. unfettered free trade, … lost it.
I’ve asked the legislature repeatedly to pass the scholarship but the GOP won’t do it.

Do you hold her accountable for those deaths?
@Dick – these are tragic things, they have to take responsibility for it, but it’s not personal it’s about leadership.
@Gov – I am a former AG, former prosecutor, there is nobody who knows this better than I do. The Dept. of Corrections was informed of this mistake, I ordered the ppl fired, the Dept. reorganized, we’ve picked up more felons. The Ricky Holland case is in trial. Nothing cuts deeper than the death of a child. Despite deficit we made sure that we had child protective services workers in place.
Tim – prior to that you did not recommend any additions.
@Gov – ordered an overhaul. There is no doubt that if a mistakes were made, they were repaired.
She’s doing a pretty good job holding her ground.

Police cutbacks –
@Gov – Feds slashed grants to 50% or 25% of what we had before, inherited largest deficit ever. We can’t continue to cut if we want to have a good quality of life. DeVos should tell us how he will replace the SBT, Wall Street lowered our credit rating.
@Dick – It’s disappointing to hear continued references to what happened 4 years ago. I want a Gov who takes responsibility and not blames Washington or everyone else. I proposed a SBT replacement, I have been very clear about an SBT replacement.
@Gov – you have?
@Dick – business, not on families, majority of income has to be replaced, broadbased competitive tax that will serve the ppl of MI. It’s good that the SBT is gone, I’m proud to have taken it out.
@Gov – this is the first I’ve heard, if that’s specific, the previous times you’ve been asked, you’ve told ppl you would tell them after the election. Gov goes on to give her plan. MI Jobs & Investment Tax.
Dick stutters. Is he nervous or does he always talk like this?

Gov is your opponent deliberately staying away from certain issues in order to get elected?
@Gov – yes, I’ve asked him to release his tax returns. (interjection – tax return??? how about theocratic tendencies???) I looked at the document of contributions – major ommission, which was that he had invested $200 million in a nursing home chain called Alterra. (ok Gov, my bad) He didn’t want us to know about that, and my concern is that there are other things he doesn’t want us to know. Because he didn’t want people to know about the allegations of sexual & physical abuse. $200 million is a big investment even for you.
@Dick – apples & oranges. If I have a conflict of interest of any kind I want it on the table & I want it clear. I don’t accept special interest $$, I want the ppl to know who I work for. What I released was a complete disclosure. It was a public company, numerous shareholders, tragic situation. Bad investment. My holdings was as a public shareholder.
@Gov – didn’t you own 12 million shares?
@Dick – I don’t know, I know I owned less than 1% of the total shares.
@Gov – it went back to 1997.
@Dick – we disclosed where we contributed and what holdings I have

Have you modified some of your personal beliefs?
@Gov – I’ve never favored reparations. However, I support Affirmative Action, and we should vote NO on Prop 2. 10 Commandments – not having a problem with it, learned that the Supreme Court gave us guidance in a way that is constitutional.
@Dick – the Gov has to be accountable for her personal decisions. I don’t know her heart.
Have you stayed away from some social issues because you are afraid of losing votes?
@Dick – I have traveled everywhere and answered every question. I am opposed to gay marriage & the people of MI agree. I am pro-life.
@Gov – I think that’s just far out of the mainstream. In the case of rape or incest, there’s no exception? The government should not be in the confessional or the bedroom.
Embryonic stem cell research
@Dick – I’m a great fan of scr (fan???) but I have great concern. Loss of life, loss of embryo. The Gov has not shown leadership to move us forward. Adult has shown promise.
@Gov – when parents decide that they are not going to use extra embryos, and they can be discarded, we should use them to save lives.
When it comes to making critical decisions, how much influence will your spouse have?
@Dick – as Gov I will seek the advice of those in govt. I take her advice but her interest is in politics not governing.
@Gov – he’s my best friend, I make the decision, I consult experts, having a spouse who is a good friend & good thinker, and a good gut instinct. I do consult him but I am the Governor.

@Gov – I am a gov who will fight for everyday citizens. providing opportunity for you. My opponent lobbied for the policies that got MI into this situation to begine with. His gain has been MI’s pain.
@Dick – The Gov said 4 years ago that this is about who gets it done. It hasn’t gotten done. that’s why I’m running for Gov. A proven jobs maker, an independent leader. I’m applying for the job of Gov. So that together we can turn MI around. together we can be proud once again.
pfft.
