Faithful Democrats has done a nice job blogging the 2006 Values Voters Summit.
For those of you not familiar with the summit, it’s “a unique platform for influential pastors, leaders, and politicians to discuss and address the concerns of social conservatives“, according to Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council, which hosted the event this year.
Americans United for Separation of Church and State has been cautioning churches in regards to this summit. Executive Director Barry Lynne: “We want to alert religious leaders throughout the country to the efforts of Focus on the Family [Dobson's group] and other Religious Right groups to lure churches into partisan political activity,” he says. “This new thrust is dangerous and could put at jeopardy the tax exemption of many of America’s individual churches.”
Perkins denied that there was any potential wrongdoing, and denied the charge of partisanship, claiming “he cannot help it if only Republicans support the issues that conservative Christians care about.”
Faithful Democrats was there watching, and did a great job summing up the top 5 “Bizarro Moments“. My personal favorite is number 4:
4) Rep. Mike Pence of IN acknowledging the biblical call to treat illegal immigrants with respect – ignoring the instruction to treat them as our own, but at least giving it a college try — then going on to say we should kick them all out in order to “preserve our culture.”
I really can’t read stuff about conservative Christians without thinking about the hypocrites and the “whackos“.
