‘Never’ Does Not Exist – Small Business / Entrepreneurship

“We will never have the prosperity we had in the 90’s. The people of Michigan just have to learn to live with less.”
–Richard Ball, debate with Mike Powers, September 2004

Note: This is the ninth in a series on revitalizing Shiawassee County

Small Business / Entrepreneurship

A strong community actively promotes economic self sufficiency by nurturing local businesses that employ local workers, and serve primarily local residents. They cultivate local leadership and they put the economic future our community in the hands of our own residents. Small business is essential to our future as a self reliant community.

SRCC and other local, state, and federal resources are available to support local businesses. While these resources are important and must remain available, they are dedicated to people who already have made the decision to explore entrepreneurship. Many of our residents do not even realize that they have the skills and resources to start their own business. Most will never question their role in life as an employee to someone else.

The county can and must invest in programs that prepare our young people to be the employers of tomorrow. County level educational programs can inspire our residents to find innovative ways to work, live, and achieve. We can help our residents understand the challenges and rewards of a small business, and open their minds to new possibilities. While we should not attempt to replace proper business training, we can encourage residents to fully explore whether self-employment is right for them. Rather than another small business incentive, this approach is an investment in the people of our county. As such, it is the responsibility of our civic leaders, and not of the SRCC or other membership driven organizations.

This program can be as simple as inviting entrepreneurs to participate in quarterly seminars, conducted in different areas of the county. The public would be invited to attend the seminars, in which participants discussed their experiences. Seminars would be recorded for webcast through the county website. This would require a small investment of time and money that could reap large rewards as our residents realize that they can be their own employers.
