Shiawassee Commissioners Oppose Their Own Party’s Legislation

December 17th, 2005 | by christine |

On Thursday, December 8, the Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners took a stand to support the Shiawassee County Friend of the Court. Unanimously, the Commissioners voted to support a resolution opposing cuts in the federal funding for child support administration costs.

The funding cuts were passed by the Republican controlled House of Representatives, and are supported by Republican Congressmen Dave Camp and Mike Rogers, who split representation of Shiawassee County. When it comes to cuts in services, you can always count on these guys to put women and children first.

Let’s take a quick look at some other cuts that these guys haven’t supported:

Capping their own salaries at $100,000 would save $85 million per year
They allow themselves to spend $40 million each year to send us junk mail
Cutting back on 2 staffers each would save $23 million each year**

Well they can’t be bothered to get behind cuts like that, when we have so much pork in child support services.

But what gets me is not that Camp and Rogers support these cuts to child support services … no, you have to expect them to support legislation that is harmful to families. What gets me is the fact that of the 7 Commissioners on our county board, only 2 are Democrats. That means that 5 Republicans voted to oppose their own party’s legislation.

Could it be that our Republican Commissioners finally understand the destructive nature of their party? Could it be that they finally understand that their party cannot govern responsibly? Could it be that they finally understand that they were wrong?

Nah. Even when they go to the polls next November, they won’t be able to connect the dots between the Republicans at the top of their ballots and their own names at the bottom.

That’s not to say our Democrats are perfect; clearly they are not. But at least we’re not Republicans.
